Criticizing The Argument

GRE Essay Topic 789 - The following appeared in a memo from Grocery Town's regional manager. "The new Grocery Town store in Elm City, located near a new residential development, has a 'high-low' pricing policy where average prices are relatively high, but deep discounts are offered on some items in weekly specials. This store has been showing increased profits every month as the nearby residential development gets closer to full capacity. It follows that people prefer a pricing policy where they can find bargains on specific items. Since there is a new residential development planned in Oak City, we should change the pricing policy at all of our Oak City stores from our current 'everyday low prices' policy to a 'high-low' policy. This will increase the profits at all of our stores in Oak City. " Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument.

Criticizing The Argument

The given argument is not cogent. This is because it is indicating a personal opinion, the location of the grocery is not benchmarked clearly, and no clear definition for the profits achieved. The essay will attempt to shed light on the weaknesses presented in the premise.

The argument is based on a memo which is stating the opinion of its writer. This means it is not based on academic background. The mentioned analysis in it might be subjective and not simulating the reality. As well, it might be based on fallacious basis which might mislead the reader. Recipients of the information can not as a result take a decision based on this argument.

When stating the location of the new food shop, it was benchmarked by the location of a new residential development. How can people reach the supermarket if the address is not accurately and illustratively mentioned? As well, is it a must to achieve gains only if you are next to a residential development? Then, there will not be groceries opening in the rural areas. In this case, rural people should travel to the urban areas to get their grocery. It is a faulty idea that is not justified or referenced.

It was mentioned that high revenues are gained by the grocery. However, it was not mention how are the profits calculated. Are the high revenues resulting from high prices or the volume of the quantities sold? And if it is the result of high prices, why did he do some discounts at the beginning if he could achieve higher gains by setting high prices. As well, when was the profit achieved, is it in summer when some products are brought at a higher rate like ice creams and drinks. Or is it at the Christmas when it is a high season for buying food. The reason for achieving profits is not clear which might misguide the reader.

Due to the faulty reasoning presented firstly no academic or trustful reference for the argument, in addition to the vague description of the location of the grocery and last mentioning the profits without giving a clue of why it is achieved. That is why the reasoning lacks logic. If the above mentioned points were supported with more evidence, it would have added definitely more plausibility to the issue.
