TOEFL Essay Topic 137 - Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? High schools should allow students to study the courses that students want to study. Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.
courses should not be chosen by students.
With the general acknowledge of the important role of high school education, some people claim that students should be allow to study the course that they really want to. Meanwhile, others strongly oppose this statement argue that students not really know what they want, so it is not a good idea to let them decide their courses. From my perspective, I do not agree with the former statement, although it may have some merit.
First, high school students should have a broad study, so that they can finally find what they really interested in and what in are good at. Since they are young, they may don’t know what they really special at, so it is better for them to try different kinds of courses, instead of only those they think they are interested in. For examples, I used to believe that I want to be a historian, before I enter the high school. At that time, I really love those beautiful stories of different famous people. However, after finishing the high school, I decide to be a psychologist, because I had a chance to take a course focus on development psychology. From I example, I think it is better for high school students to learn different subjects because their interesting areas may change during the study.
Moreover, many subjects are very useful for them in the future, even though they don’t like them, they should take those courses. Some science courses, such as chemistry, math or art courses such as music, may be very difficult for many high school students, so they hope that they can choose to not take those courses. However, those courses are very useful in their life. For example, those science subjects can help people thinking deeply, while arts can teaches students how to appreciate of the beauty in their really life. By study both art and science at the same time, one young heart will be natured and become mature.
Admittedly, learning both art and science make give students many pressures. They may need to spend a lot of time on courses they do not good at, comparing with those who are good at. If they cannot get a good score on those courses, they may loss heat and feel upset. However, if their parents and teachers can give them some help and encourage, I believe that they can have a faith in overcome this.
To sum up, I do not agree that high school should let their students to choose course by themselves based on the above statements.
