TOEFL Essay Topic 66 - Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Classmates are a more important influence than parents on a child`s success in school. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
Classments or parents
We spend a lot of time with our friends in school and our parents in our family. Both have great impact on our success. In this setting, the question at hand is which have a stronger impact on our success in school life, classmates or parents. I strongly believe that classmates contribute to our successful life, especially in school because they have the knowledge we need and the same kind of experience we have.
First and foremost, our classmates help us with studying. They have more greater and clearer understanding on what we learn in schools than our parents, which sometimes help us. For example, when I was in high school, my friend, Takashi, helped me solve a problem in our physics class. He was very good at physics. I sometimes didn’t understand what the physics teacher taught us and didn’t solve the question the teacher impose us for our homework. It was Takashi, who helped me in such situation. He explained how to solve the assignment in a way that I was able to understand easily. As a result, I successfully got high score on the term exam. If I had asked my parents, they would have not been able to answer my question because they had learned physic over 20 years ago. This example evidently portrays that our classmates are more likely to help us with our study, because they are more likely to know the answer we would like to know.
Furthermore, our friend also helps us in mental aspect. The reason of this is that they tend to have the same kinds of problems and concerns. As you might know, in Japan, where I live, the competition to enter good universities is extremely fierce. Since I was planning to enter the University of Tokyo, when I wan in third year at high school, I studied until midnight everyday. One day, I was so exhausted that I was almost giving up to enter the university. However, that was when Satoshi, who was aiming to apply the university too, encouraged me to study together. I really got embolden by his words and decided to continue to study hard. Six months later, both he and I successfully passed the entrance examination for the university. There is no doubt that our classmate supports us to keep our healthy mental because they share same concerns and problems.
In conclusion, I agree with the statement, “Classmates are a more important influence than parents on a child’s success in school.” They not only help us study, but also support to keep our mental health.
