Cave

GRE Essay Topic 751 - The following appeared in a letter to the editor of an archaeological magazine. "Archaeologists excavated a cave that had been inhabited by prehistoric people for thousands of years. These people hunted wild animals, many of whose bones were found at levels corresponding to different times of habitation. Most of the bones at the oldest levels, over 40,000 years old, were from a deer species whose modern-day descendants are known to prefer woodland habitats, whereas most of the bones at more recent levels, dating from 30,000 to 10,000 years ago, were from a gazelle species whose modern-day descendants are known to prefer grasslands. We can thus conclude that the climate of the area changed dramatically between 40,000 and 30,000 years ago, causing the terrain to change from woodland to grassland. " Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument.

Cave

The author in the argument above is discussing about a prehistoric cave being excavated by archaeologists that has bones of animal from various species of deer..He states that bones that oldest bones over 40,000 years old seem to belong from species whose modern day descendants prefer woodland whereas the bones at recent level from 30,000 to 10,000 years ago modern day species depend on grassland. So,he is assuming that there has been a drastic climatic change between 40,000 to 30,000 years ago.

It has been scientifically proven that our planet Earth is going through climatic and numerous geological changes from the time of existence. However, with the advent of new industrial, hazardous technological and many more, our planet is going towards a lot unwanted changes like ozone layer damage etc, than before.Global warming is at an alarming rate. But expecting drastic climatic changes during 40,000 to 30,000 does not make sense.People at that time had very simple lifestyles with less industrial wastes and pollution of every kind. So,any factor that causes potential climate change were simple.

Moreover, the author makes assumptions based on the findings of bones in cave.He has not stated or given any proof if whether bones found of those particular animals were themselves grassland or woodland? So,the modern day species of a deer preferring woodland could be same at that time too.Same goes for gazelle species too.

Also, author has not mentioned the fact of how big that cave is.On the top that cave could be used by people who had a certain preference of animals for hunting.or how long that cave is used for?

As mentioned above, climatic changes are always happening around but expecting sudden changes from people with simple lifestyle and no solid proof is not valid. Therefore, more investigation should be made.
