By looking at advertisements in various countries, one can figure out a lot about a country’s culture. Depending on where advertisements are used, the approaching method and content may vary. I believe by decoding advertisements we can learn what values and how these values are communicated to the costumers. Thus, I believe advertisements convey more than just promoting commodities. They also tell us about the consumer and the society they try to impact on.
For instance, American advertisements tend to be very direct and persuasive. After I moved to the United Stated a few years ago, I quickly figured out that advertisement in the U.S. function differently than what I was used to in Norway. Especially, campaign ads were a new phenomenon to me. I had never seen political campaign ads on TV before. Consequently, by watching the campaign ad I learned about the tough reality of campaigning through political ads here in the United States. Furthermore, I realized that advertisements are promoted in a very direct way here.
Unlike the direct-method approach that is often the case in the U.S., humor is frequently used in Norway to approach consumers. Norway has a social democracy which is a mix of socialism and controlled capitalism. I believe these values are quite often visible in advertisements. For example there are no health insurance companies that advertise health insurance. Furthermore, the state strictly regulates laws of advertisement. For instance, advertising alcohol is forbidden. Paying attention to these facts when seeing advertisements when can learn about values and cultures in a country.
In conclusion, there is no doubt that by looking at advertisements in various countries one can learn and detect the culture of different countries. For instance, while in America a direct approach to consumer is quite prevalent, in Norway humor is used to persuasive consumers.
