Although some people may have different views, I think universities should require students to take classes in diverse subjects. I would like to give detailed reasons in the following paragraphs.
First and foremost, university students will be able to dramatically broaden their horizon by learning various subjects. There is a tendency that most of the students specialized in science take only classes related to science, and most of them whose major is non-scientific field only take non-scientific ones. However, taking classes totally different from their interest sometimes changes our point of view, which is usually very refreshing experience for us. For instance, when I was an undergraduate school student, I took a social science class in which we learned the world affairs from various viewpoints including the history of the world and ethnic problems. At first, I was not so interested in the class because I had already decided to major physics in my latter period of undergraduate. Nevertheless, I was absorbed in almost all of the contents provided in the class. They were elaborately structured and I could easily understand the current world affairs in detail, namely, causes, influence, and future of each event. I could feel refreshed in every time I attended the class because the class always changed my viewpoints on world affairs, which I could not obtain in my major class.
In addition, students can make new friends who are distinct from them in the class unrelated to their major. Students are inclined to make friends with the same major because they take the same class and their way of thinking is usually similar. The problem is that students are likely to be narrow-minded persons in such closed community. Personally, young people including university students should be open-minded persons by being acquainted with various people. Taking classes different from their major will be good opportunities for that. In such class, they will have to ask questions about the class to those who are specialized in the subject, which is a good start to make friends with those who are different from them. After making friends with each other, students will be able to exchange their thoughts and they will realize that opinions about something can be different from persons to persons. Also, they will become good at talking with various people. If they take only their own subjects, they will not able to broaden their horizons in such a manner.
In conclusion, I can conclude that universities should make students take classes different from their major. Students will be refreshed by studying many subjects and will make friends with different subjects, which will broaden their viewpoints.
