GMAT Essay Topic 411 - The following appeared as part of an annual report sent to stockholders by Olympic Foods, a processor of frozen foods. "Over time, the costs of processing go down because as organizations learn how to do things better, they become more efficient. In color film processing, for example, the cost of a 3-by-5-inch print fell from 50 cents for five-day service in 1970 to 20 cents for one-day service in 1984. The same principle applies to the processing of food. And since Olympic Foods will soon celebrate its twenty-fifth birthday, we can expect that our long experience will enable us to minimize costs and thus maximize profits." Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. In your discussion be sure to analyze the line of reasoning and the use of evidence in the argument. For example, you may need to consider what questionable assumptions underlie the thinking and what alternative explanations or counterexamples might weaken the conclusion. You can also discuss what sort of evidence would strengthen or refute the argument, what changes in the argument would make it more logically sound, and what, if anything, would help you better evaluate its conclusion

We live in a modern society in today’s world. Our life has changed a lot thanks to the advanced technology compared to the 20th century as well. It is a fact that our experience can enable us to reduce the cost while make more profits due to the advanced technology. This principle does apply to the many things in our daily life which includes the Olympic food production time. On the other side, the advanced technology can bring us some inconvenience sometimes. Needless to say, I enjoy the advanced technology a lot and I believe the majority people enjoy the new technology as well.
According to a survey, “we do save lots of time travel around the world than last century”. People used to travel around the world by ship in last early century, it cost them 3 months from China to North America. However, we only need average 14 hours to travel from China to North America by airplane in today’s world. This example demonstrates that our experience will help us to reduce the lost while increase the profit. We surely can produce the same amount of the Olympic food in a shorter period than 25 years ago. This is because our experience does help us a lot.
Sometimes, the advanced technology can bring us some inconvenience. For example, we surely can produce the same amount of Olympic food in a shorter period by cooking machine. However, we won’t be able to do this without the electricity. If we are suffering the power-shortage while we cook the Olympic food, it’s a disaster for the Olympic players. Thus, it’s unrealistic to think we can accomplish anything in any condition by using the modern technology.
Once again, the new technology can help us minimize the cost while maximize the profits. However, it will bring us some inconvenience sometimes as well. I still enjoy the new technology because we rarely experienced the unpleasant experience by using the modern technology.
